# Blocked Drain in Your Jeddah Home? What Causes It and How to Fix It

Nobody calls a plumber the first time a sink drains slowly. You run the tap, the water sits there a second longer than it used to, and you forget about it. Then one morning you’re standing in a shower with the water halfway up your ankles, or the kitchen sink is holding a grey pool that won’t move. That’s usually when my phone rings.

Here’s the thing. A blocked drain almost never happens overnight. It builds for weeks, and if you catch it early you can often clear it yourself in ten minutes. So let me tell you what actually causes them, what works, what doesn’t, and when it’s genuinely time to call someone.

What actually blocks a drain

It’s rarely one dramatic thing. It’s a slow build-up of the usual suspects, and which one depends on the drain.

In the kitchen, it’s grease and food. People pour hot oil down the sink, it slides down while it’s warm, then cools and sets solid further along the pipe like candle wax. Add rice, tea leaves, bits of vegetable, and you’ve got a plug forming where you can’t see it.

In the bathroom, it’s hair and soap. The two bind together into a surprisingly tough mat that catches everything else. If you’ve got long hair in the house, the shower drain is on borrowed time.

And here in Jeddah, there’s a third factor that quietly makes all of it worse: the water. More on that in a minute, because it matters.

The DIY fixes that actually work

Before you buy anything, try the simple things in order.

Boiling water. For a slow kitchen sink, a full kettle of boiling water poured straight down can soften and shift a fresh grease clog. Do it in two or three goes. It’s free and it works more often than you’d expect.

A plunger. Not just for toilets. A cup plunger over a sink or shower drain, with enough water in the basin to cover the rim of it, gives you real force. Block the overflow hole with a wet cloth first so the pressure goes down the pipe instead of out the side. Twenty firm pushes will clear a lot of clogs.

Baking soda and vinegar. People swear by it, and it does help with smell and light build-up. Half a cup of baking soda, then a cup of vinegar, leave it to fizz for fifteen minutes, then flush with hot water. Honestly, it’s mild. It won’t touch a serious blockage, but for maintenance it’s fine.

Removing the trap. Under the sink there’s a U-shaped pipe called the trap, and it catches things. Put a bucket under it, unscrew it by hand, and clean it out. This sounds intimidating and it’s the single most effective DIY fix there is. Half the “blocked drains” I get called to are just a full trap.

The one I’d tell you to skip is chemical drain cleaner. It’s harsh, it doesn’t always work on grease or hair, and it sits in your pipes eating at them and at the seals. I’ve opened up traps half-dissolved by the stuff. If the simple fixes don’t work, a plumber will clear it properly without pouring acid through your plumbing.

Why Jeddah drains block faster

This is the local part, and it’s real. Our water is hard, which means it’s full of dissolved minerals. Over time those minerals leave scale, a chalky deposit, on the inside of your pipes. You’ve seen it crusted white around taps and on the kettle element. The same thing happens inside the drain pipes, narrowing them slowly.

A narrower pipe catches grease and hair more easily, and it clears more slowly. So a drain that might shrug off a bit of oil in a soft-water city clogs up properly here. It’s also why the same drain keeps blocking every few months even after you clear it. The scale is still there, and the gap is still tight.

When it’s not a simple clog

Some signs tell you it’s past the DIY stage, and you should stop before you make it worse:

Those point to a main-line blockage, and that needs proper tools, a drain snake or a jetter, not another kettle of hot water.

What does clearing a drain cost?

It depends on how deep the blockage is and how it’s cleared, so I won’t put a number on it here that turns out wrong on the day. A simple clog cleared at the trap is a small job. A main-line blockage that needs a machine is more, because it takes the right equipment and time. If you’re not sure which you’ve got, ask me and I’ll tell you honestly before I start. A quick look is always cheaper than a flooded kitchen.

If you’re past the DIY stage, that’s what our plumbing service is for, and you can book a plumber whenever it suits you.

FAQ

How do I unblock a drain myself? Start with boiling water for a kitchen sink, then a plunger with the overflow blocked, then clean out the U-shaped trap under the sink. The trap is the most effective fix and clears a lot of “blockages” that are really just built-up gunk sitting in that bend.

Does baking soda and vinegar actually unblock drains? For light build-up and smell, yes, a little. For a real blockage, no. It’s too mild to shift a solid plug of grease or a mat of hair. Use it for upkeep, not for a drain that’s already stopped.

Why do all my drains gurgle at once? Gurgling across several drains usually means the blockage is in the shared main line, not under one fixture, and air is being forced past it. That’s a plumber’s job, not a DIY one.

Is a blocked drain an emergency? A single slow sink isn’t. But if waste water is backing up into the house, or multiple drains are blocked together, treat it as urgent, because it can overflow and cause real damage.

Why do my drains keep blocking in Jeddah? Hard water. The minerals in it leave scale inside your pipes, which narrows them over time, so grease and hair catch more easily and the same drain keeps clogging even after you clear it.
